Media activism and the appropriation of the maracatu rural Estrela de Ouro

2020

The Appropriation of Pernambuco Maracatu by the Cultural Industry

Everyday life and cultural representations are elements researched in the field of Social Communication, considering that popular classes also have their own means of communication. In this way, contemporary society makes use of the multiple forms of communication and cultures offered by networks.

We cannot understand the influence of the media without understanding what society does with the events disseminated by media outlets; that is, what the media does to society and what society does with the cultural goods conveyed by the media. This intimate relationship between culture and popular communication is called Folkcommunication.

We may say that Folkcommunication is communication produced by the people through artisanal means. “The popular classes thus have their own means of expression, and only through them can they be understood and make themselves understood” (BELTRÃO, 1980, p. 47).

During Carnival, when folkloric manifestations are presented more expressively, the activist uses the media to publicize their stories, beliefs, and customs. It is mainly through the media that all this representativeness is disseminated.
