Contested Image

The book contributes to retelling the episodes of the Contestado War, highlighting the way in which social actors and forces were represented by the newspaper throughout the conflict. Thus, it unveils the meanings present in journalistic discourses through the different images that shaped the War in the pages of the press.

This is an analytical perspective that brings together references on the press and society of the period in order to trace, through the symbolic work carried out by journalism, the process of constructing an episode that, one hundred years later, remains practically ignored by official Brazilian history.
