Quilombola culture in Lagoa da Pedra, Arraias, Tocantins
2010
Wolfgang Teske, who experienced the cultural manifestations of the quilombola communities of Lagoa da Pedra, in Arraias, in the state of Tocantins, analyzes local culture with rigor, showing how it intertwines with environmental heritage.
The cult of São Bom Jesus da Lapa, for example, is carried out in a geological space: a cave located on a farm in the region. In the study, the author relates cultural practices, understood as folk communications — or “Folkcommunication” — linked to environmental knowledges.
The result of extensive and meticulous fieldwork, this volume also presents a small iconography of the events narrated, in addition to a competent understanding of the phenomenon of culture in Afro-Brazilian communities and its relationship with nature.
