(Folk) communication and humanization in health

*(Folk)Communication and Humanization in Health: Case Studies, Reports, and Perspectives* is an invitation to reflect on what universally moves all human beings — the desire to be happy and to escape pain — showing that, despite cultural, social, and economic differences, we share the same finitude and affective needs.

The work moves through reports and case studies ranging from a widowed elderly woman in a peripheral community in Recife, fearful of losing her children’s affection if she seeks a new partner, to a young transgender woman who has suffered violence and fears being called by a name that does not represent her, to parents facing the early loss of a daughter. It also includes stories lived by the author himself, as well as by students and colleagues, illuminating the importance of good practices centered on welcoming, listening, and mutual recognition.

The text argues that theory and technique are only fully realized when transformed into human gestures, reiterating that all of us — regardless of origin, condition, or destiny — share the same impulse toward happiness and the same desire to escape suffering. It calls on health professionals, educators, and readers in general to build a practice guided by goodness, empathy, and the simplicity of gestures that make care an antidote to pain, inspiring us to continue believing in the beauty of life and in the transformative power of being, above all, human.
